In the second half of the nineteenth century, a Polish-born physician working in Brazil compiled one of the most consequential medical books in Portuguese. Pedro Luiz Napoleão Chernoviz’s Formulário e Guia Médico and its companion dictionary went through edition after edition and ended up in an improbable number of households — a reference book for a country where doctors were scarce and distances were long.

Among the hundreds of plants Chernoviz catalogued is boldo, and the entry is a useful lesson in how medical knowledge gets simplified as it travels.

Two plants, one name

“Boldo” in Brazil does not reliably mean one species. There is Peumus boldus, the Chilean boldo, an evergreen whose dried leaves are exported worldwide and which carries the alkaloid boldine. And there is the plant growing in an enormous number of Brazilian backyards, commonly Plectranthus barbatus — a mint-family shrub with large soft leaves, known as boldo brasileiro or boldo-da-terra.

They are not related. They are used almost interchangeably in domestic practice, and they have different chemistry. Any discussion of “what boldo does” that does not first say which boldo is already unreliable.

Telling them apart

Chilean boldo arrives as small, stiff, aromatic dried leaves in a packet. Brazilian boldo is the large, soft, slightly furry fresh leaf from the garden. If you picked it yourself in Brazil, it is almost certainly the second.

What the formulary actually recorded

The nineteenth-century entries share a habit that modern popular herbalism has largely lost: specificity of preparation. Chernoviz-era formularies describe the part of the plant, the preparation method, the strength, and the dose — infusion versus decoction versus tincture, and how much of each.

That precision is the forgotten part. Contemporary advice tends to collapse into “boldo tea is good for the liver,” which is simultaneously too vague to follow and too broad to be true. A dosed infusion of a specified leaf is a different object than an unspecified handful of whatever is growing by the wall.

Where the evidence stands

Boldine, the principal alkaloid of Peumus boldus, has been studied for antioxidant and choleretic activity — that is, effects on bile flow. Extracts of Plectranthus barbatus have their own literature, including work on gastric and digestive effects. In both cases the honest summary is that there is real pharmacological interest and insufficient clinical trial evidence to make confident therapeutic claims.

Boldo also carries genuine cautions. Chilean boldo contains ascaridole, which is why its essential oil is not something to take casually, and both plants are conventionally avoided in pregnancy and in liver or biliary disease. The traditional literature knew about the contraindications too; that is the other half of what gets dropped.

Why the archive is worth reading

The value of a book like Chernoviz’s is not that it was right. It is that it is a snapshot of what a nineteenth-century clinical practice actually used, written for people who had to make decisions without a hospital nearby. Read as history, it tells you which plants mattered enough to be standardized — and standardization is a clue that something was observed to work often enough to be worth writing down.

Read as a prescription, it will get you into trouble. Read as an archive, it is one of the best entry points into Brazilian plant medicine that exists.
